Race Day Tips

As an expert fan, you probably have race day all figured out. If so, DON'T read this fun list of race day tips.

DO:

  • Check a map so you don't get lost going to and from the track.
  • Leave for the track early — you don't want to get stuck in traffic and miss the race.
  • Bring sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen.
  • Remember that the national anthem has to be COMPLETELY over before you hear "Gentlemen, start your engines."
  • Remember your gear: scanner, seat cushion, earplugs and binoculars.
  • Show how much you love Jeff Burton with apparel, flags and banners.
  • Visit the #31 merchandise hauler for NEW Jeff Burton race gear.
  • Remember to get a scanner channel sheet and program the scanner BEFORE the race starts.
  • Have a designated driver when needed.
  • Drink plenty of water, especially in the summer.

DON'T:

  • Forget your tickets.
  • Forget to bring food and beverages so you can tailgate after the race while you wait for the traffic to leave.
  • Forget to bring an umbrella or poncho just in case.
  • Be the irritating person who waits until the last minute to find your seat.
  • Forget to stand and take your hat off during the national anthem.
  • Forget to take a cooler with you to the grandstands.
  • Forget to make a creative sign so you can get on TV.
  • Wear a white shirt if you are sitting in the first few rows — unless you don't mind that it's gonna be black from the tire rubber that flies off during the race.
  • Pick fights with other people just because they're not Jeff Burton fans.
  • Forget that Prilosec OTC treats frequent heartburn.

6 Tips to Crazy

As if you needed any help, here are some top tips for how you can be the craziest NASCAR fan you know.

  1. Make a sign for your favorite driver. You can use a sheet of poster board, cardboard or design it on a bed sheet and stretch it out with your friends. Make it colorful. Make it fun. And most importantly, get on camera!
  2. Wear all the NASCAR gear you can get your hands on — at a bare minimum: hat, shirt and jacket.
  3. For the inevitable tailgate, bake a sheet cake and use the icing to declare the magnificence of your favorite driver. Or make cupcakes with your driver's number on them and hand them out.
  4. Start a blog about your favorite driver. Be sure to include driver facts, stats and your impressions of his performance during the year. (There are several free, easy-to-use blogging websites out there like blogger.com, myspace.com and facebook.com.)
  5. Design a trivia quiz about your favorite driver and force your friends or family to endure it (ideally, right before the race).
  6. And most importantly, cheer wildly every time your driver is mentioned by the announcer, and perhaps even in casual conversation.
