More PPIs are becoming available over the counter, so it's important for healthcare professionals to gather accurate information and know how they compare to the original OTC PPI. For instance, the tested formulation in the study is lansoprazole 15 mg. It should be noted that lansoprazole 15 mg is the same formulation as Prevacid24HR.
The Study
The study design for our clinical trials was randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled.
The primary objective was to compare the 24-hour gastric acid control of omeprazole magnesium 20.6 mg vs lansoprazole 15 mg at steady state (Day 5).
The primary endpoint was % of time pH > 4.0 on Day 5.
It should be noted that the tested formulation is lansoprazole 15 mg, which is the same formulation as Prevacid24HR.
The Results
Patients experienced 24% longer acid control vs. Prevacid 15 mg (OTC)1 on average.
72.5% of patients had greater control with Prilosec OTC1.
Prilosec OTC provided some patients up to 2x longer acid control than Prevacid 15 mg (OTC)1.
